Introducing "Her Story" – A Community of Support for Women in Optical Facing Breast Cancer

Mikki Collins

In the optical industry, we uplift each other, celebrate our successes, and push boundaries together. But what happens when one of us faces a challenge far greater than a career hurdle—when a woman in our industry is diagnosed with breast cancer?

No woman should fight cancer alone. That’s why the Optical Women’s Association (OWA) is proud to introduce "Her Story"—a community-based initiative founded by Mikki Collins, dedicated to supporting women in optical who are on their cancer journey. Whether you’re newly diagnosed, in treatment, a survivor, or a colleague wanting to support a friend, Her Story is here to provide strength, connection, and a place to be heard.

Why "Her Story" Matters

Breast cancer affects one in eight women in the United States. Behind every diagnosis is a woman balancing work, life, and the emotional weight of her journey. In an industry built on relationships, it’s crucial that no one feels isolated in their fight.

Her Story creates a safe space within the OWA for women in all stages of their cancer experience. Here, members can share their personal stories, find support from peers who truly understand, and connect through group discussions and events. The initiative will launch at the OWA Champagne Breakfast at Vision Expo East in Orlando, FL, on February 19, 2025—an event dedicated to unity, encouragement, and hope.

How to Get Involved

Becoming part of Her Story is simple:

  • Join the Optical Women’s Association and connect with the Her Story group.

  • Nominate a friend, colleague, or mentor who may benefit from this supportive community.

  • Participate in benefit events like Cancer Walks across the U.S.

  • Share your story or read those of others on the OWA member homepage.

To get started, contact Mikki Collins at Mikki.Collins@safilo.com.

Honoring the Women Who Inspire Us

Her Story is deeply personal, inspired by two remarkable women whose strength and passion shaped the optical industry.

The late Claudia Garza-Robinson was a cherished colleague, friend, and beacon of light in our industry. Claudia’s dedication to her patients, coworkers, and the optical world left an unforgettable mark. She bravely fought breast cancer before passing on September 1, 2024, leaving behind her husband Mann Robinson, son Zyron Garza, and daughters Dezaren Bosstick (OWA Member & Her Story Committee Member) and Harper Robinson.

We also honor the memory of Kerry Clynes, who dedicated her career to optical sales and left a lasting impact on those who worked alongside her. Kerry also lost her battle with cancer in 2024.

Claudia and Kerry’s stories serve as the driving force behind this initiative, and we are proud to honor them through "Her Story."

A Special Thanks

This initiative would not have been possible without the unwavering support of Dr. Lori Lippiatt, Janna Neal, and Susan Ludwick, who saw the vision for Her Story and understood the need for a community like this.

A heartfelt thank you to Dezaren Bosstick, Reagan Colpitts, Carissa Dunphy, and the Community & Enrichment Committee for their dedication in helping launch Her Story. Your passion and commitment are the foundation of what we are building.

Our Vision for the Future

In the coming years, Her Story aims to expand into a foundation that will provide financial assistance to women who need to step away from work during treatment. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that every woman in optical facing cancer has the support, resources, and community she needs—because no one should fight alone.

Join us in building a legacy of strength, love, and unwavering support. Because every woman’s journey matters. Every story deserves to be told.
